Once, as a young boy, Radhanath Swami was faced with a question that would shape the course of his entire spiritual journey:
“If God is love… Why is there so much hate committed in his name?”
At just eight years old, he heard something no child should ever hear. A close friend told him, “My parents hate you… because you’re Jewish. Even God hates you.”
Confused, shaken, and searching for truth, he went home and asked his mother a simple yet profound question: “Does God really hate me?”
With tears in her eyes, she replied,
“God loves everyone. God loves you.”
That moment planted a seed.
As he grew older, this question stayed with him. He explored different spiritual traditions, reading scriptures like the Bible and the Bhagavad Gita, searching for answers.
Why do teachings rooted in love often get expressed through division?
Why do people become arrogant, judgmental, and hateful in the name of religion?
Slowly, a realization began to unfold. True spirituality is not the cause of hatred. Ignorance is.
In Sanskrit, this ignorance is called Avidya - misidentifying ourselves with temporary labels like religion, race, nationality, or status.
From this comes Ahamkara, the false ego, the need to prove superiority over others.
And from that… division, insecurity, and conflict are born.
But beneath all these layers lies a deeper truth:
We are not this body or mind.
We are the soul - eternal, full of knowledge, and inherently joyful.
And the natural expression of this realization is compassion.
As Radhanath Swami explains:
Things may give temporary pleasure to the body and mind, but only love can truly satisfy the heart.
To love and to be loved, that is what every human being is searching for.
True religion is not about labels or identities.
It is a universal path that helps us rediscover who we really are and live as instruments of compassion.
